Heatherly has been the stable star for the training partnership of Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra since making her competitive debut in early 2015 and will enter the Challenge Stakes with a positive record of five wins and six minors, through only thirteen starts.

The daughter of Lonhro trialled well in the lead-up to her return in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) a fortnight ago, but was unable to handle the late pace of the race and finished sixth.

Zahra told Racing Victoria that Heatherly worked the house down on Tuesday morning and is more than deserving of a berth in Saturday’s Group 2 Challenge Stakes field.

“She worked fantastic this morning on the grass reverse way, so we’re rapt with the way she’s going,” Zahra said.

“At this stage, we’ll go to Sydney but we’ll see what the weather does.

“She did trial on that bog track at Cranbourne the other day and it didn’t seem to worry her too much so if we decide to go that way, we’ll run her.”

Zahra said that the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes was not run to suit Heatherly and the team are expecting a far-better performance when she contests the Challenge Stakes.

“Once Faatinah came out, the speed came right out of the race and it became a bit of a tale of woe,” he said.

“I think there will be a lot of form come out of that race.

“It ended up a bit of a sit and sprint and that didn’t really suit her so we were happy with the run and the main thing, she came through in great order.”

Heatherly won the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) early in 2016 and was sent to the paddock with a view towards the spring after she ran third in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m).

Resuming in August for a smart win in the Listed Carlyon Stakes (1000m), Heatherly placed third in the McEwen Stakes (1000m) before ending her year second behind Extreme Choice in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m).
