Strategy Change for Rubick in 2015 Challenge Stakes

March 5th, 2015

Classy colt Rubick is a noted pace-setter, but may settle within the field of nine in Saturday’s Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) at Royal Randwick according to trainer Gerald Ryan.

Posting a commendable record of three wins over his short but impressive five start career so far, Rubick has not been seen at the races since finishing a disappointing 12th in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on November 1st; having been drawn on the ‘slow’ side of the Flemington track.

Having taken up the pace at the fore of the pack in each of his competitive appearances on course so far, Ryan told Racing Ahead the son of Encosta De Lago packs a powerful late punch when settled off pace, and is confident the 2015 Challenge Stakes; boasting a speed-rich field, may figure as the perfect opportunity to alter the three-year-old’s strategy.

“He is going really good,” Ryan said.

“He looks well, he is a lot more settled this time and when Brenton rode him in a trial at Randwick he could have got way back in the field if he wanted to.

“There is lot of speed in the race and we might be able to ride him to take a sit, which we have been wanting to do for a long time.

“When he sits behind horses here at home he can let down really quick and put them to the sword in two strides.

“It might be a nice chance to try it from where he is drawn and the speed that is drawn around him.

“If you go forward first-up over 1000 metres and run 100 miles an hour you are going to be found wanting in the end and if anything else is prepared to take it up we will be prepared to take a sit on them.”

Debuting with back-to-back race wins early in 2014, including the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude C&G (1100m), Rubick left as favourite in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes, but faded late after leading to finish fourth.

Returning in spring amongst open company in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1000m), Rubick never appeared in doubt; hitting the line a length in the clear of closest rival Platelet in what was his only other start prior to the Stud Stakes. is currently offering the best 2015 Challenge Stakes odds, for which Rubick can be taken at a quote of $3 for success.
